Rodent models are typically used as surrogates for human disease and this article provides examples of how targeted nutrient manipulations in rodent diets influence NAFLD development in mice, rats, and hamsters. This article also focuses on study design details including nutritional components of the diets (and their controls), proper control diet choice, animal model/strain, and length of the study to clearly outline the strengths and drawbacks of the different dietary methods of inducing NAFLD in rodents.
